Parents (and especially grandparents) are quick to pull out pictures of their children and grandchildren. There are reasons we do this. There is joy in looking at the latest video or picture. It delights our hearts like nothing else, and in our loving pride, we want others to know the beauty of our children too.
Our lives would be better if we spent more time each day gazing at Jesus. Consciously. Deliberately. Continually. The writer of Hebrews reminds us of what we will see as we look at Christ.
God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. (Hebrews 1:1-3)
HE IS THE HEIR OF ALL THINGS
As you gaze at Him, realize that He owns everything. He has received it from His Father. And spend a moment thanking Him because you are a joint heir with Him to all He has if you are a genuine follower of Christ.
HE MADE THE WORLD
Gaze around you and see the beauty of creation. Then look to the stars. Then look (if you could) at the astounding intricacies of your own body. Then look at Christ because He made it all!
HE IS THE RADIANCE OF GOD’S GLORY
Christ radiates God. In Him, we see the perfect glory of God, and “He became flesh and dwelt among us” so we could see God’s glory in a way we could comprehend.
HE IS THE EXACT REPRESENTATION OF GOD’S NATURE
Jesus is God and therefore is all that God is. There is no difference, no change in nature between the Father, Son, and Spirit. This means that you can trust Christ just as you trust God.
HE UPHOLDS ALL THINGS BY THE WORD OF HIS POWER
Everything is held together in this world by Christ. In Him, we “live and move and have our being.” God has given the Enemy a season of activity on the earth He created, and men without Christ are sinful and destructive. We see chaos in this world, but above it all is the hand of Christ holding the world in His palm.
For by Him, all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. (Colossians 1:16-17)
HE MADE PURIFICATION FOR OUR SINS
In the greatest demonstration of love, Christ left heaven, laid aside His rights and privileges as God, lived as a man, and then died in our place to purify us from the stain and guilt of our sins. He opened a way for us to have peace facing God and to live with Him forever.
HE NOW SITS AT THE RIGHT HAND OF THE MAJESTY ON HIGH
If you want to find Him, look at the right hand of the throne of God. He is there and will never leave. We have access to that throne room because we have “obtained an introduction through Jesus Christ by faith into this grace in which we now stand” (Romans 5:2). The practical doorway to this throne room is prayer, and we can enter and talk to Him at any time. In fact, He commands us to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17).
Look at Him today! Spend deliberate time with Him in prayer. Worship Him and give Him thanks. Cry out to Him for His wisdom, provision, and direction. He is waiting for you.
