STUDYING GOD

November 13, 2017

Do you want to have a properly balanced life? To overcome despair and distrust? To live in joy and gratitude? To be properly equipped to live a godly life? To fulfill your purpose during your brief stay here and be prepared for eternity?

Then study God. Look at His wonders. Gaze upon His goodness. Ponder His works continually. This was the key to David’s spiritual success, a man after God’s own heart.

""Great are the works of the Lord; they are studied by all who delight in them. Splendid and majestic is His work, and His righteousness endures forever. He has made His wonders to be remembered. (Psalm 111:2-4a)

ABOVE ALL ELSE

If you get to know God you will see that there is none like Him. You will be overwhelmed by His unfailing love. Startled by His kindness. Your pride will melt before His holiness. You will obtain a proper reverence of His righteous judgments that will curb your sinfulness. Trust will grow as you discover His faithfulness. Your heart will overflow with genuine hope because of the confidence you find in His abundant promises.

You cannot study God without gaining joy. Tozer understood this.

“What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us. The history of mankind will probably show that no people has ever risen above its religion, and man’s spiritual history will positively demonstrate that no religion has ever been greater than its idea of God. Worship is pure or base as the worshiper entertains high or low thoughts of God.

For this reason, the gravest question before the Church is always God Himself, and the most portentous fact about any man is not what he at a given time may say or do, but what he in his deep heart conceives God to be like. We tend by a secret law of the soul to move toward our mental image of God. This is true not only of the individual Christian, but of the company of Christians that composes the Church. Always the most revealing thing about the Church is her idea of God.” (A.W. Tozer, The Knowledge of the Holy)

OUR TEXTBOOKS

You must study God, spending time with Him both listening and communing. You must read His Word voraciously, for it is His most objective revelation. His face is on every page. You must look for Him in nature, for He is the Artist behind every flower and the Hand holding every galaxy of heaven in perfect balance. You must commune with Him in prayer to discover His nearness. And, most importantly, you must gaze upon His Son, for He said, “If you’ve seen Me, you’ve seen the Father.”

It is an inexhaustible pursuit, but the most joyful thing you will ever do, and the most worthwhile. And, the more you know Him, the more you will love Him with all your heart and mind and soul and strength. You will find yourself automatically fulfilling the greatest commandment and living in the foyer of heaven.

SETTLING THE ISSUE OF WHY YOU LIVE

I have known many people who have had great joy and power in the midst of great suffering. It is humbling that the slightest inconveniences deter many of us from following God. We have not gotten to the bottom—settled the issue. Most often, we live for our comfort, reputation, or gain. When any of those goals are touched, we are troubled and discontent.
