THE FAITH EQUATION

THE FAITH EQUATION

How big is your problem? How many enemies do you face? Whatever the size, it doesn’t matter if you trust God. The size of your army or your opponent makes absolutely no difference when God is in the equation.

GIDEON’S MASSIVE DILEMMA

Gideon faced an overwhelming Midianite army of 135,000 soldiers. Although Gideon had 32,000 men, apparently, God thought 4:1 odds were still not enough.

The Lord said to Gideon, “The people who are with you are too many for Me to give Midian into their hands, for Israel would become boastful, saying, ‘My own power has delivered me.’” (Judges 7:2)

God whittled the army down to 10,000, but this was insufficient. Knowing that Gideon and his men might still think their power delivered them, God reduced it further to 300 men. Now, the odds were good enough for God to display His power: 450 to 1!

God now spoke His promise to His leader, a promise that had unbelievable odds but simply called for faith in a faithful God.

The LORD said to Gideon; I will deliver you with the 300 men who lapped and will give the Midianites into your hands. (Judges 7:7)

God’s reluctant leader needed a little more encouragement for his faith, so God let His servant overhear a dream and its interpretation from one of the enemy’s soldiers, a dream that foretold of Gideon’s victory. It was the final brick in the wall of faith for Gideon, and he went to battle with the 300 men, and God gave them an overwhelming victory.

YOUR FAITH

The Biblical faith equation is always the same. It has three components: your problem/enemy, God’s power, and your faith. It could be written mathematically like this:

Your insufficiency + your meager faith + GOD = God’s victory over your PROBLEM/ENEMY

What is the size of your enemy? That’s not the right question. What is the depth of your weakness? Still not the right question. What is the size of your God, and what is the size of your faith? If you take even small, trembling faith and place it in a great, sovereign God, He will win the day.
