Followship is a predictable thing. We follow leaders because they are going places we want to go and helping us to find what we're looking for.
For instance, you vote for certain government leaders because you think they give you and those around the best chance of getting what is needed.
But there is another component in followship: You follow those who have character. Not many people will follow someone if they consistently demonstrate that they are mean, unkind, not good, and never faithful--they don't do what they say they will do.
You may follow them initially, but the initial trust will wear off and soon you will turn away and turn to another.
FOLLOWING GOD
... should be for us the most natural, easiest thing to do in this world. Why? Because He will provide exactly what we need and His character is impeccable. Perfect, in fact. David knew this and reminds us of it and rejoices in it often.
Psalm 25
Good and upright is the Lord;
Therefore He instructs sinners in the way.
9 He leads the humble in justice,
And He teaches the humble His way.
10 All the paths of the Lord are lovingkindness and truth
To those who keep His covenant and His testimonies.
11 For Your name’s sake, O Lord,
Pardon my iniquity, for it is great.
12 Who is the man who fears the Lord?
He will instruct him in the way he should choose.
13 His soul will abide in prosperity,
And his descendants will inherit the land.
14 The secret of the Lord is for those who fear Him,
And He will make them know His covenant.
Look what those who follow Him receive ... the places that God leads them to--justice, genuine prosperity (which is way more than mere money), an inheritance for himself and his descendants...the secrets of God are his.
And look at His character: He is good, upright, filled with lovingkindness and truth; completely trustworthy and faithful, revealing (He makes us know His covenant.)
You can't beat God for a leader. Period. So, why would we possibly turn away from Him today? Why would we resist Him when He says, ""No, son, don't go there,"" or ""Son, follow me in this path right now.""
David’s prayer should be our prayer today:
Make me know Your ways, O Lord;
Teach me Your paths.
Lead me in Your truth and teach me,
For You are the God of my salvation;
For You I wait all the day.
