Is there something in the blank for you—even seemingly good things that rob you of the God-life? Or have you discovered the blessed, secure, sufficient only-ness of God?

You have a tragic, irreconcilable problem. You are a sinner (and so are we all). We came into this world separated from God, sinners by birth. But we are also sinners by choice. And our sin bears the ultimate result: it separates us from God. This is the worst penalty, for we were designed to live on God, and it’s impossible to find life without Him.

Various people affect us in various ways. Some are life-taking. To be around them is to come away completely drained, defeated, and discouraged. No one has the luxury of avoiding such people all the time, or ministry wouldn’t happen. But it’s hard.

The world is filled with sinfully proud people. We’re all proud. This is tragic, for pride is the mother of all sin, and the explanation for everything evil in this world.

Everybody has fears. We fear failure, disrespect, and discomfort. We are physically afraid of anything that might touch our well-being. Financial fears nip at our heels. There are people and relationships that frighten us. Often we are so afraid of men’s opinions that we overcompensate and let them determine how we will respond—a man-fearing spirit. We fear loss and ultimately death. You name it, we fear it.

Parents (and especially grandparents) are quick to pull out pictures of their children and grandchildren. There are reasons we do this. There is joy in looking at the latest video or picture. It delights our hearts like nothing else, and in our loving pride, we want others to know the beauty of our children too.
Our lives would be better if we spent more time each day gazing at Jesus.

The great conviction of my life is this: Everything flows from the presence of the Lord. Everything. If you are experiencing the presence of Christ, you have everything that matters and lasts. If you are not, you have nothing of value.

In bold relief, we are seeing unprecedented mental, spiritual, moral, emotional, and physical depravity in our nation. I have watched this demise over the last seven decades. But we have never encountered this level. How do you explain this?

To discipline means to train. The Greek word is “gymnasio,” from which we get “gymnasium.” We immediately associate this word with physical exercise, but the word has a far larger application. Paul warns his young disciple, Timothy, about the coming apostasy and what we must do to avoid it through a life of disciplined growth.

When you are weak, do you quit? Do you wallow in despair and self-pity? Do you resign yourself to a second-best effort? Do you try to pull yourself up by your own bootstraps? Or do you, like David, say, "For YOU are the God of my strength!"

Of all the conversations I've had with hundreds of men across the years, the number one question is: "What am I supposed to do with my life?" We want to know our purpose, and we must. As always, God is not silent. Look at Paul's instructions to the young man, Timothy, in 1 Timothy 2.
