Jesus prayed (and is praying now) without ceasing. While on the earth, He was in constant communion with the Father. As He came to the end of His life, the Bible records one of His final and most important moments of intercession.

So, what is Christ’s greatest desire for His followers, as expressed in His prayer? His prayer should give us a very practical for us to pray for ourselves and for those who know Him.

There is nothing more thrilling than seeing lives changed. When we are involved through our intercession, it spurs us to increase our “bringing.” For the believer, these two acts—prayer and bringing—are the most significant things we can do with our lives. Jesus is the only Savior, but we can intercede for others and bring them to Christ.

The tool that God has given us to maintain intimacy with Him is prayer. Prayer is nothing less than the continual communication between two who love each other. If we know our need for Him (which is humility) and long for His direction and guidance, we will talk to Him about everything throughout the day.

In Daniel, Chapter 9, we read one of the great prayers of the Bible. Similar to Jeremiah’s prayer in Jeremiah 1, Daniel pours out his soul for his nation. His prayer is a mighty prayer for us to pray, word-for-word, as we cry out for our nation.

But does God hear his humble, repentant prayer? The next chapter reveals the response of our prayer-hearing and prayer-answering God.

It is said of Martin Luther that he dreamed he was transported to heaven and there noticed thousands of boxes with his name on them. When he asked the angel what they were, the angel replied, “These are answers to prayers that have never been asked.”

God has much more for us. He reminds us that “we have not because we ask not” (James 4:2).
