We know whether something is valuable or worthless by comparison. A shiny, new car may look fabulous, but it is worthless if it has no engine. The ugliest car with a working machine is far more valuable for the need.
Everyone follows a god. You can pursue the gods of this world (power, pleasure, possessions) or the Lord God Jehovah. But it’s essential to do a proper evaluation.
ISRAEL’S FOLLY
The people in the prophet Jeremiah’s day had relentlessly pursued false gods. Jeremiah calls them to compare. He reminds them that a craftsman makes a false god. “Do not fear them,” Jeremiah says. “For they can do no harm, nor can they do any good.” (Jeremiah 10:5).
And then, he reminds them of the one true God.
But the Lord is the true God, the living God, and the everlasting King. (Jeremiah 10:10)
It is He who made the earth by His power, Who established the world by His wisdom, and by His understanding, He has stretched out the heavens. When He utters His voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, and He causes the clouds to ascend from the end of the earth. He makes lightning for the rain and brings out the wind from His storehouses. (Jeremiah 10:12–13).
As you make your choice, think of these realities about the Lord God.
This is the reality and power of God. This is the One true God, and there is none like Him. He is who He says He is. He is alive, and He never goes away. He is ever-lasting. His power and life have never diminished. He is constant in His existence and unfading in His attributes.
Why would you foolishly choose any other god to worship and follow?
Father, there is none like You. The comparison is ludicrous. Help me remember the contrast when I’m tempted to walk away from You and follow some false, worthless god that is the product of man’s hands. And thank You for providing a way that I can know You and be joined to You forever!
