SELF-FORGETFULNESS

SELF-FORGETFULNESS

by Bill Elliff March 05, 2024

When we have genuinely made the turn, we don’t live for ourselves anymore. We live for Christ and the others He loves. Our conversation does not orbit us but Him. Our service is not to help yourself but others (with no thought of ourselves). We enter the blessed, liberating state of self-forgetfulness and find the biggest and most joyful life possible.

STRUTTING

STRUTTING

by Bill Elliff January 12, 2024

We see strutters everywhere in our society now. Wickedness is abounding in the land and it strengthens the hand and voice of the proud among us. In their arrogance, they think they are winning, that they have the right to do and say whatever they want (even if it flies in the face of the One-Who-Made-Them). When people applaud you and wave banners that reinforce your position, it’s sadly incredible how bold you can become.

“HE MADE THE STARS ALSO”

“HE MADE THE STARS ALSO”

by Bill Elliff September 19, 2023

When you’re lifted up in pride or bowed down in discouragement, look at the stars. Every bright light reminds us that He is God and there is no other. The One who made the stars and knows them by name, made you. And you are of infinite worth to our Sovereign Creator.

“He made the stars also.”

OH, TO BE SAVED FROM MYSELF!

OH, TO BE SAVED FROM MYSELF!

by Bill Elliff August 18, 2023

Pride is such a devious and deadly sin. I find it creeps upon my soul when I least expect it, and suddenly and almost unconsciously, I'm worried about what others think, anxious to be known, drawing attention to myself, thinking about and pampering my desires before others’ needs, and on and on. It chokes my intimacy with Christ, turning my eyes from Him to myself. It makes me a sorry friend, more interested in what others can do for me than I for them. It robs me of genuine love, quick generosity, selfless service—everything that we want our lives to truly be.

THE REWARD OF HUMILITY

THE REWARD OF HUMILITY

by Bill Elliff July 27, 2023

The world is filled with sinfully proud people. We’re all proud. This is tragic, for pride is the mother of all sin, and the explanation for everything evil in this world.

We want to be known, applauded, first, recognized. Pride causes us to lean on our own humanity, not God. A clear indication of our pride is how little we pray. If we don’t really turn to God, it’s a clear indication we think we can handle life on our own.

A PROPER VIEW OF MYSELF

A PROPER VIEW OF MYSELF

by Bill Elliff June 07, 2023

The Lord honors those who see themselves rightly. He promises to bless a man who lives in wise dependency before Him. As he looks to the Lord, God provides him with all he needs, and the world sees what a man with a correct opinion of himself is like.

PRIDE

PRIDE

by Bill Elliff September 28, 2021

Pride is the mother of all sins. God says a great deal about arrogance in the Scripture because we need to understand its source and effects. "God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble" is a truth that is repeated three times in the Bible. It is a foundational sin, a default posture of our thinking, that most of us will deal with until we see Him face to face.

HOW IMPORTANT ARE PEOPLE TO YOU?

HOW IMPORTANT ARE PEOPLE TO YOU?

by Bill Elliff August 20, 2021

If we are not careful, the ever-present pride of our hearts will blind our eyesight. Pride exalts ourselves and puts ME at the center of everything. When my vision is filled with me, I cannot see God. But also, I cannot see the people around me. They become objects used for the purpose of exalting me.

LIVING FOR MAN'S APPLAUSE

LIVING FOR MAN'S APPLAUSE

by Bill Elliff August 11, 2021

In God's economy, actions motivated for human praise will be the only accolades we get. But if we live to please God alone, we will receive a great reward in heaven, and our earthly actions will be unscented by the noxious smell of pride.

WHAT IS THE SOURCE AND THE RESPONSE TO THE ENEMIES OF THE LORD?

WHAT IS THE SOURCE AND THE RESPONSE TO THE ENEMIES OF THE LORD?

by Bill Elliff March 12, 2021

In the work of God, there are always those who oppose. I have watched countless churches plateau and die because of a man or group of men who fought God's work.

But it is critical for God's leaders to know the source of such opposition. It is always pride that leads to control.
