This is not a selfish request from our God, but something our Creator knows must be habitual if we are not to lapse into a grotesque caricature of what He designed. God knows that without this continual practice, we will misplace our affections, aim our worship at ourselves, and ruin our lives and our nation.

Do you realize what God has done for you in Christ? Notice the three uses of "bless" in the verse above. Paul blesses God because he has blessed us with every spiritual blessing.

PSALM 136
… is an amazing Psalm. The Psalmist recounts 26 different things God had done for Israel. Each statement is followed by this refrain “For His lovingkindness (checed) is everlasting.” It’s almost hard for us to read because of the redundancy of this statement. But that redundancy is the point. Every statement of what God has done for us should be followed by a humble, awe-inspired statement of gratitude.
