Paul was afraid as he ministered in the city of Corinth. The reason we can believe this is because Jesus doesn't waste words. He comes to him in Acts 18 with an encouragement that addresses his fear.

God wants us to know His triune self. He has gone to extraordinary lengths to make Himself accessible, even to the sending of His Son, who took upon human flesh. John says that when we saw Jesus, we saw His glory … the glory of God’s only begotten Son, full of grace and truth (John 1:14). And He has placed His Spirit inside every true believer giving us the capacity to know Him personally.

Of all the things Jesus could have addressed in the Sermon on the Mount, it's fascinating that He spends a good bit of time addressing worry. In fact, He commands us not to be worried: "Do not be worried about your life."
We are champion worriers. God knows that worry is so counterproductive. Not only is it useless, but it ties us up, destroys our faith, is a poor witness to those who are watching, and dishonors God. So, to help us He gives His true followers multiple reasons why worry is so useless.

All of us feel insecure at times. The confusion in our souls, the darkness of the world, the press of problems and difficulties can overwhelm us. We become fearful and stressed.
But for those who have come into a relationship with God through Jesus Christ, there is no need for anxiety; no cause for fear. God Himself is our refuge.

Our great fears regarding anything and everything stem from the thought that we are alone. That we are in over our heads and there is no one to help us. Our inadequacy fuels our discouragement. And it should.
