To discipline means to train. The Greek word is “gymnasio,” from which we get “gymnasium.” We immediately associate this word with physical exercise, but the word has a far larger application. Paul warns his young disciple, Timothy, about the coming apostasy and what we must do to avoid it through a life of disciplined growth.

Somehow, we naïvely believe that all problems will be over because we’re now in Christ. “In this world,” Jesus said to His followers, “You will have tribulation.” Christ does not intend to deliver us from all troubles in this life. In fact, His empowering amid difficulties is the means of our greatest witness to others.

Physical hunger is an essential drive placed in us by God Himself. Without it, we would die from malnourishment in a matter of weeks. What is true in the physical is also true in the spiritual. If you are not hungry spiritually you will never grow. And if you never grow, you will never be used by God to grow others. The work of God will end in your generation as far as you are concerned.
