DIVINE CONSTRUCTION

“I go to prepare a place for you.” (John 14:2)

Eight simple words. But on these words hinges our entire future for eternity. What could be more important? And for the believer in Christ, what could be more compelling? More encouraging?

“I GO”

This promise is not from some fallible human. If a company or a social agency offered it, we would (rightfully) have our doubts. But this is the Son of the Living God who proved His veracity by His death, burial, and resurrection. He has gone to heaven to personally do something for those who know Him.

“TO PREPARE”

What is ahead for us requires the work of preparation. We do not deserve it. And yet, once again, Christ intervenes for those He loves. He oversees the creation of this new place, just as He did in the beginning.

“A PLACE”

When you read the revelation John was given on the Isle of Patmos (the last book of the Bible), you realize the magnitude and beauty being prepared. Our home will be perfect in every way—a new heaven and new earth with no taint of sin, no hint of decay. New heavenly bodies will one day be ours to enjoy this Eden restored.

He’s getting it ready.

“FOR YOU”

These are the most thrilling words. Christ is addressing His disciples who were fearful about His impending death. “Don’t worry,” Christ said, “I’m going for a little while, but I’m on a mission for you. I’m getting heaven ready, and I will come again to get you. And, until then, my Spirit will come to live in you, giving you all you need for your remaining days upon this decaying earth.”

What a promise, but what a warning. This is only for those who have recognized their sin and separation from Christ. Who have by faith, turned to Him and cried out for His work of salvation and been adopted into His family. The prospect of a Christless eternity is as horrendous as heaven is glorious. You must be born again.

Father, words escape us. We are so grateful. Heaven is our great hope and sure defense against every fear of the future. You are working personally, once again on our undeserved behalf, getting eternity ready for us! Help me today to tell others about this glorious future that is only found through You.

This is the heart of revival, both personal and corporate. Revival intimates two things have occurred: a drifting and a return. We have wandered from Christ. Our hearts have become cold and lifeless. To be revived is to be brought back to that which is life itself. It’s not a return to a program or a discipline. It is to fall in love with Jesus all over again. It is a repentance unto Him.

Is prayer a nice thing to do? Something we resort to when we are in a serious situation? A word to describe one of the disciplines of the Christian life? Secondary, but not really all that essential? Something we do as a segue between songs on a Sunday morning? Or is it the essence? The foundation? The fragrance that is to pervade everything for the serious follower of Jesus? The ultimate pathway to communion with God and the source of life and power for all we are and do?

Why should we pray fervently for the blessing of a nationwide or worldwide spiritual awakening? Why should we unite (as Jonathan Edwards said) in “explicit agreement and visible union among God’s people in extraordinary prayer for a revival of religion and the advancement of Christ’s kingdom on earth?” Why should we seek to cooperate together and not tear apart the beginnings of His awakening in our nation?
