The mark of great men and women is their singularity of purpose. If you dissect them, you discover there is a consuming passion that drives them, making them what they are. This was true of David. And his Psalms reveal this again and again. We see this clearly in Psalm 27.
One thing I have asked from the Lord, that I shall seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord and to meditate in His temple (Psalm 27:4).
IT SHOULD BE OUR PRAYER
David said this was the one thing that He asked from the Lord. It was the constant cry from his soul that he would be allowed to abide in the fullness of God’s presence.
IT SHOULD BE OUR PURSUIT
It was not enough to pray, David did more. He sought God's presence. He pursued God with everything that was within him. This involved listening to the Lord, dealing with all that would abort intimacy with God, and responding to God's instructions instantly. David’s life was centered around God and, as a result, David lived and led with God’s mind and heart.
THE OUTCOME
... of this prayer and pursuit was stunning. David's life had the mark of God upon every endeavor. The greatest king in Israel's history, save Christ. The wisest ruler. The most ardent worshiper. The undefeated warrior. Blessing on every hand came because of this oneness of focus. His only failure, by the way, came when he took his eyes of Christ and turned to look at the world.
Why not make this your daily prayer and pursuit? Could there be any greater?
Dear Lord, help me to live with such passion. Keep my heart and mind focused upon You. Let me long for the fullness of Your presence in and through my life. May my life be so filled with You that it overflows to others with sweet fragrance and gracious spiritual power.
