There are many times in life when we feel adrift, alone, abandoned. When we do not know which way to turn, which path to take.
If we’re not careful, our minds can wander and become envious of others, just like the Psalmist in Psalm 73. His “steps came close to slipping” until he came into the sanctuary of God.
But this is why the one who walks with God has such an extraordinary advantage. And such incredible delight. Listen to how the Psalmist describes such a life.
Nevertheless, I am continually with You; You have taken hold of my right hand. With Your counsel You will guide me, and afterward receive me to glory. Whom have I in heaven but You? And besides You, I desire nothing on earth. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. (Psalm 73:23-26)
When a man chooses, by God's grace, to draw near to God continually, an amazing set of circumstances occurs.
This is why the Psalmist sings with delight at God's presence and power in His life. He realizes no one else can do this, which narrows his desires for anything and anyone else on earth. Christ becomes his focus and passion, for he realizes that in Christ—and only in Christ—he has all that he needs and wants.
Father, help me today to walk continually with You. To let nothing interfere with our relationship and communion. Help me to talk to You today without ceasing. To live in constant conversation and awareness of You. Thank You that you will counsel me about everything needed. You will take hold of my right hand and lead me. You will lead me right into Your glory, both now and forever. And Lord, may You be my sole desire, my greatest affection … all day long and forever!
