It’s the greatest question on any given day. What’s the next step? What’s the most important thing that we should give ourselves to?
It was the big question on the day of Pentecost as people from every nation under heaven heard Peter’s sermon about Jesus Christ.
Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brethren, what shall we do?” (Acts 2:37)
Peter knew exactly what they were to do and gladly gave them instructions.
Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself.” (Acts 2:38-39)
These people, who were just now hearing the good news about what Christ had done, had but one choice to make: will we turn from our old way of thinking (repent) and come follow Christ, or continue in our rejection of Him? And 3,000 of them chose to believe. Look at the glorious result for those who repented and were baptized.
So then, those who had received his word were baptized, and that day there were added about three thousand souls. They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe, and many wonders and signs were taking place through the apostles.
And all those who had believed were together and had all things in common, and they began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need. Day by day, continuing with one mind in the temple and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved. (Acts 2:41-47)
If you have not yet done so, there is no more important step for you today. Remember what Peter said, “This promise is for you and your children and all whom God is calling to Himself.” If your heart is stirred, cry out to God today to save you. Tell your children the good news so they can also receive the gift of eternal life.
You must turn from a Christ-less life and give your life to Him, trusting Him to save you. As you do, you will find the most joyful, purposeful life possible. Millions of people throughout the ages will testify to you that there is no greater next step.
