15 THINGS YOU NEED TO REMEMBER ABOUT OUR GOD

Jonathan Edwards was, perhaps, the greatest theological mind America has ever produced and the key figure in the First Great Awakening. Edwards once said, "Our task is to give the world a right opinion about God."

The Psalmist did this, of course. And one of the most beautiful hymns tells us so much about Him. It's why we love Psalm 23 so much. Notice what it says of Him.

 God ...

  1. PERSONALLY OVERSEES US: "The Lord is my Shepherd"
  2. PROVIDES FOR US FULLY: "I shall not want"
  3. GIVES US REST: "He makes me lie down in green pastures"
  4. QUENCHES OUR THIRST: "He leads me beside quiet waters."
  5. RENEWS US: "He restores my soul"
  6. LEADS US IN THE RIGHT PATHS: "He guides me in the paths of righteousness"
  7. PURIFIES OUR MOTIVATIONS: "for His name's sake"
  8. MAKES DEATH MERELY A VALLEY AND A SHADOW: “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death”
  9. CALMS OUR FEARS WITH HIS PRESENCE: "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me"
  10. CORRECTS US GENTLY AND PERFECTLY: Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me."
  11. PROTECTS US: "You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies"
  12. HEALS US: "You have anointed my head with oil"
  13. SATISFIES US: "My cup overflows"
  14. IS GOOD AND MERCIFUL TOWARD US: "Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life"
  15. PROVIDES A HOME FOR US FOREVER!: "And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever."

It would be good to take these wonderful revelations about God and pray them back to God right now. Be specific in thanking God for the ways He has shepherded you across your life. And never worry again about the Father's love for you!

This is the heart of revival, both personal and corporate. Revival intimates two things have occurred: a drifting and a return. We have wandered from Christ. Our hearts have become cold and lifeless. To be revived is to be brought back to that which is life itself. It’s not a return to a program or a discipline. It is to fall in love with Jesus all over again. It is a repentance unto Him.

Is prayer a nice thing to do? Something we resort to when we are in a serious situation? A word to describe one of the disciplines of the Christian life? Secondary, but not really all that essential? Something we do as a segue between songs on a Sunday morning? Or is it the essence? The foundation? The fragrance that is to pervade everything for the serious follower of Jesus? The ultimate pathway to communion with God and the source of life and power for all we are and do?

Why should we pray fervently for the blessing of a nationwide or worldwide spiritual awakening? Why should we unite (as Jonathan Edwards said) in “explicit agreement and visible union among God’s people in extraordinary prayer for a revival of religion and the advancement of Christ’s kingdom on earth?” Why should we seek to cooperate together and not tear apart the beginnings of His awakening in our nation?
