LOOKING UP IN A LOUD SEASON

As I write, we are in a political season. It is important, in some ways, but it is filled with the loud boasts and constant plots and plans of humans. Honestly, it wearies me and, if not careful, pulls my soul away from the presence of the Father.

IT IS TIME

… to look up. If this is not your daily, hourly exercise you will be consumed by the world. You will get frustrated and confused and will tend to think that the world depends upon the will of men. But you must flood your soul with an upward gaze. The Psalmist takes us there this morning in Psalm 104. He calls his soul (and ours) to bless the Lord.

Bless the Lord, O my soul! O Lord my God, You are very great; You are clothed with splendor and majesty, covering Yourself with light as with a cloak (Vs. 1-2)

Walk into His throne room this morning and gaze at Him until the loud, vain ramblings of men and machines cease, and your heart is filled with Him. Peace will return and rest and worship.

OUR CREATOR

The One before whose throne you stand made heaven and earth. He “stretched out heaven as a tent curtain” and “makes the clouds His chariot and walks upon the wings of the wind.”

He established the earth upon its foundations so that it will not totter forever and ever. You covered it with the deep as with a garment. The waters were standing above the mountains. At Your rebuke, they fled. At the sound of Your thunder they hurried away. The mountains rose; the valleys sank down to the place which You established for them. (Vs. 5-8)

This is the One we stand before and worship this morning. This One holds the nations in His hands and turns kings like rivers of water, accomplishing His purposes of blessing or judgment.

OUR PROVIDER

The economy is the big topic on 24/7 news, and men think they know the source of getting more. But it is not the topic of discussion among the birds of the sky and lilies of the field. They know their provider. In fact, all of creation (except most men and women) look to One source for their sustenance, and He gives it as He desires.

The young lions roar after their prey and seek their food from God. (Vs. 21)

O Lord, how many are Your works! In wisdom, You have made them all. The earth is full of Your possessions. There is the sea, great and broad in which are swarms without number, animals both small and great. (Vs. 24-25)

They all wait for You to give them their food in due season. You give to them, they gather it up; You open Your hand, they are satisfied with good. You hide Your face, they are dismayed; You take away their spirit, they expire and return to their dust. You send forth Your Spirit, they are created and You renew the face of the ground. (Vs. 27-30)

In the constant barrage of words and noise from men, with their bold claims to save the world (often laced with lies like it was candy) come before your God. Worship Him. Remind your soul that He is your Creator, Provider, and Source. He is your King and Sovereign. He is perfect in truth and eternal in faithfulness. In Him all His promises are “Yes and amen!” He rules over the affairs of men and will one day bring the earth to a perfect consummation and redemption.

Look UP and then join the Psalmist and make this your cry in this political season:

“Bless the Lord, O my soul. Praise the Lord!” (Vs. 35)
