The spirit of a man can endure his sickness, but as for a broken spirit who can bear it? (Prov 18:14)
But You, O Lord, are a shield about me, My glory, and the One who lifts my head. (Psalm 3:3)
Two profound Scriptures help me this morning as I read His Word. It is possible to have a broken or defeated spirit. As the writer of Proverbs says, this is worse than a sickness. When your soul has been defeated, you are at the end.
There can be multiple causes for this, and you may not even understand the cause, but when your soul has reached its lowest point, you know it. It is hard to function with a broken spirit. Who can bear it?
THE REMEDY
… is not found in the words of men. In such dark valleys, you must have a greater encounter and hear a greater Voice. It is in these moments that God can do what no man can do for your soul.
He lifts our heads. He reaches down to the one who is “downcast” and gently lifts our head. How He does this, only He can know.
And when we look up, we see the face of Him who is always there. The One who never sleeps nor slumbers. The Lion of the Tribe of Judah. Our shield, our glory, our Rock, our Defender, our Comforter. The very sight of Him is all we need for we quickly realize that our problems are not beyond His reach and our illness is not beyond His healing. Whatever we face, He will provide sufficient grace.
He has lifted my head thousands of times throughout my life and He will, no doubt, do it a thousand more.
How could I not trust and follow and praise such a personal God?
