Many professing followers of Christ are very weak. Their lives are marked by a daily battle with petty sins they should have overcome many years ago. They must constantly be reminded of the most elemental truth.

Your life is made by multiple decisions. So, what do you do first as you face the choices of each day? Sadly, most of us do not do what Jehoshaphat recommended. “Please inquire FIRST for the word of the LORD.” The word “first” literally means “as the day.” It could mean “today, right now.” But it also implies “for this day, in this particular moment.”

This is a consistent principle that God speaks to us repeatedly: if you have an affection for something God has forbidden, it will gradually turn your heart to the god behind that affection. You will not be a man after God's own heart like David was, but a man whose heart is turned away after other gods, like Solomon.

The blessing of God is when God takes something natural and makes it supernatural. When He takes the normal beyond normality. When His hand and his smile are upon a person, a family, a land. To be under God’s blessing is to be in the optimum position for this life and the next.

How would God sum up your life in a paragraph? Genesis, Chapter 5 is a brief genealogy from Adam to Noah. In the midst of the normal accounting, there is one man with a noticeably different description. This phrase, “walked with God” repeated twice, set Enoch apart from other men. Three words summarize his life. Three words imply so much.

The great miracle of Christianity is that there is a fundamental change that occurs when we come to faith in Christ. There are two changes that happen to a believer that are both judicial (dealing with the problem of the guilt of our sin) and practical (dealing with the problem of our power over sin in our daily life.

Christ is sufficient. In every way, in every circumstance, in every location, Christ takes care of his own and provides what is needed for the moment.
We may not be in a position to receive it. Our spiritual receiver may be tuned to the wrong channel, but if we are listening and dependent, we will find all we need in Him.

There are many things God allows us to know in our brief life if we are listening. These are a few that God has reminded me of on my 70th birthday today. This is not intended to be a comprehensive theology or even all my best understandings about God. These are just thoughts that come to my mind in on this day about God, the wonders of His goodness to me, and how we must aggressively cooperate with Him. I would know nothing of value apart from Him. Nothing.

My friend, Rob Thorpe, sent me a blog he wrote on the death of his father-in-law. He was struck when the funeral director said to them, "Now what four words do you want on his grave-marker?" This particular gravestone, aside from the name and dates, only allowed four words to sum up an entire life.

How do you decide the will of God in areas that are not clearly defined in Scripture? Romans 14 is a key chapter for us as believers who live to help others and glorify God. It gives us principles upon which to make decisions about “grey areas” of life, i.e., those areas that one Christian believes is legitimate to indulge in while it hurts another’s conscience.

We are absolutely intrigued by the thought of a human with superhuman powers. Endless stories—from ancient mythology to current movies—promote these ideas. There is a reason for this. We were created by God to be superhuman. To have power beyond the average human. We were made for more and something in us longs for more. Fictional stories often touch this idea but leave out the reality of how it is possible.

Many people have no understanding of where they stand before God. They think of it occasionally, even nonchalantly, as if it didn’t really matter. Everything in this life and the life to come hinges on your standing before God. You are either separated or together. Disconnected or united. Standing as God’s enemy or adopted as His child. Forgiven or unforgiven. Headed to hell eternally or heaven. There is no in-between.
