We are absolutely intrigued by the thought of a human with superhuman powers. Endless stories—from ancient mythology to current movies—promote these ideas. There is a reason for this. We were created by God to be superhuman. To have power beyond the average human. We were made for more and something in us longs for more. Fictional stories often touch this idea but leave out the reality of how it is possible.

Many people have no understanding of where they stand before God. They think of it occasionally, even nonchalantly, as if it didn’t really matter. Everything in this life and the life to come hinges on your standing before God. You are either separated or together. Disconnected or united. Standing as God’s enemy or adopted as His child. Forgiven or unforgiven. Headed to hell eternally or heaven. There is no in-between.

One of the great hopes of all our lives as followers of Christ is that we can become MORE. More useful, more loving, more gracious, more like Christ, a better witness, etc. Apollos was such a man. We only have five verses in the whole Bible that describe him (

I love bread. Almost any kind. When I was a child, I would often go to the corner bakery with my father. I pressed my nose against the glass counter and watched in utter fascination as they brought our bread straight from the oven and cut it on a special machine. I could hardly wait to get home and find the butter. I love bread (did I already say that?)
I have discovered, though, a few downsides of bread through the years. Bread can go bad. Mold sets in, and it's useless. And too much bread can add extra pounds that none of us need.

Our natural inclination is for self-promotion, self-comfort, self-fulfillment, and self-recognition. A merely humanistic agenda can easily consume us. Many never escape this broad path, vainly believing it will yield the life they've always wanted.
But if a man wants the most substantive life he must die to this approach. Here's how Jesus described it in twenty words.

I want to be a man that God can entrust with His truth and that can, in whatever measure God allows, experience the glory of God. We all long for this genuine experience of God in our lives. In His mercy and through the great work of Christ, God has now made it possible for us to be literally inhabited by God! His Spirit lives in us, giving us the opportunity to know and be led by His presence daily and continually.

Every house must have a foundation. Without a solid footing, the house may look good for a while externally but will have a structural failure when bad weather comes. A solid foundation is the key to a building that will last. What is true of a building is also true of a life and a people.

Perhaps you are being called by some naive friend (or demonic enemy in disguise) to fall back into the familiar old ways. Old habits, old pleasures, old relationships, old doubts, old disobediences. Do not give in! Stand strong and firm following Christ into the new ways and lands He has taken you. The lands that were gained by faith.
