THE DEVASTATING RESULTS OF SIN

Sin has consequences. Every sin, all the time. God is merciful, but our sin sets things in motion. Notice the litany of David about what his sins had done in Psalm 38.

  • Your hand has pressed down on me (vs. 2)
  • There is no soundness in my flesh or health in my bones because of my sin (vs. 3)
  • My iniquities have gone over my head (vs. 4)
  • As a heavy burden, they weigh too much for me (vs. 4)
  • My wounds grow foul and fester because of my folly (vs. 5)
  • I am bent over … and go mourning all day long (vs. 6)
  • I am badly crushed, and I groan because of the agitation (growling) of my heart (vs. 8)
  • I am sighing (vs. 9)
  • the light of my eyes is gone (vs. 10)
  • I do not hear (vs. 13)
  • My sorrow is continually before me (vs. 17)
  • I am full of anxiety because of my sin (vs. 18)

Sin matters. It has physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual consequences. It may be that what you are suffering right now is purely a result of your sin.

If it is, there is a remedy in Christ. If we confess our sins He is “faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). It’s the better choice with the better result.

Father, search me. Turn the light on in my soul and show me any sin lurking there. Give me grace to see it, agree with you about it, and turn from my ways. Remind me of the manifold consequences of unresolved sin.

SETTLING THE ISSUE OF WHY YOU LIVE

I have known many people who have had great joy and power in the midst of great suffering. It is humbling that the slightest inconveniences deter many of us from following God. We have not gotten to the bottom—settled the issue. Most often, we live for our comfort, reputation, or gain. When any of those goals are touched, we are troubled and discontent.
